Yes I keep up with the Kardashians and no I’m not ashamed!!

I’m going to make a bold statement! Are you ready...?

I love Keeping up with the Kardashians!!!

Honestly I do and I’ve found over the years that many people share my healthy obsession with the family but like me, they kind of keep it under wraps. I’ve also found that people who don’t like the Kardashians, think it’s okay to belittle those of us who do but I’m sorry that’s just not kool (see what I did there 😉).

Why do you love the Kardashians I hear you cry. Well personally I work in a very tense environment and to be honest, before I started my current job 6 years ago, I had never even watched the Kardashians. One of my peers was totally in to Kim K and the rest of the family and because of her, I thought I’d have a little watch and you know what....I’ve never looked back.

If you’re highly stressed about something or work in an intense environment like myself, sometimes you just need a break and that break can take many forms. Reading, meditating, writing, working out, watching tv; and for me all of those things apply. Watching KUWTK is just one of the things I like to do and something I enjoy because it’s light hearted, the family make me laugh and when you need a little break, it’s perfect for taking your mind off things.

People that don’t watch the Kardashian’s and judge those of us who do, paint a negative picture in their minds of us based on our love of keeping up. Some of the most intelligent people I know love watching the Kardashians. So because we watch this show does it make us any less of a good or smart person? No it doesn’t but it does make me think twice about anyone who thinks it’s okay to look down on those of us who do like the show. We can’t all love watching the news, reading newspapers and hiking. There has to be some balance in life.

Now I might not love all of the things the Kardashians do but I find their show highly entertaining and there is a side to the Kardashians that people who are not fans, will not know about. Such as the things they do in their commmunity, their philanthropy and charitable work. They’re not all about pouting and selfies. These women have multi million dollar businesses. They’re extremely successful women who are also giving back.

The Kardashian’s don’t deserve the hatred and abuse that they get. I say about them what I say about most celebrities, at the end of the day, they’re just people. They have family and friends and feelings and a job. They just happen to be in the public eye (and have chosen to share some of their story in their show).

Recently I have been outraged by some of the comments people were making about Khloe’s pregnancy announcement. The vast majority were positive and expressed an extreme happiness for the Kardashian sister, who is known to have had trouble conceiving in the past and who has longed for a child of her own for some time.

Of course though the trolls were out “oh now you want to show off your bump”, “do we have to see you clutching your bump in every picture”, “you didn’t want to share it before now it’s all we hear about”.  First of all Khloe does not owe anybody anything. She did not have to share any news with us. We are privileged to be sharing this journey with her, as pregnancy is such a blessing and a sacred time for expectant mothers. Most mothers don’t share their pregnancy with anyone in the first trimester, because they want to make sure everything is okay with the baby.  Khloe is a normal person. A normal pregnant person. The abuse and negative comments are not justified nor are they necessary.

Some folks act all high and mighty if you tell them you like the Kardashians. Why? You don’t have to understand the Kardashian clan and you don’t have to understand why people like them, you just have to be willing to accept that some people do and I can accept the fact that some people don’t. Just don’t look down on me for it.

I don’t want to sound too preachy here and I’m aware that some of this may come across that way but my main message here is don’t judge. Don’t judge me for indulging in KUWTK and don’t judge the Kardashians based on fake news and a couple of internet breaking selfies. Okuuurrrr!!

Double Standards!!!

Don't you just hate them?  Like, people say one thing, either about themselves or a certain situation but it's the total opposite for them, like it's not ok for you but it's all good for them.    The term double standard , coined in 1912, refers to any set of principles containing different provisions for one group of people than for another, typically without a good reason for having said difference.  A double standard may take the form of an instance in which certain concepts (often, for example, a word, phrase, social norm, or rule) are perceived as acceptable to be applied by one group of people, but are considered unacceptable or taboo when applied by another group . Taken from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_standard . I've recently been in a situation where a double standard was applied.  I didn't even realise it at first and the truth is we are all faced with double standards every day in our lives.  For example, people will s...

Rastamouse - is it really irie man?

How many of you have seen the new CBeebies children's programme Rastamouse?  It features a Jamaican Rastafarian mouse and his crew of 2 (Scratchy and Zooma) aka The Easy Crew.  They solve mysteries in their native Mouseland.  Now when I first saw this I thought it was hilarious. Hearing these characters speaking patois on a children's programme was amazing to me and a sign of how far we had come in this country, accepting and promoting diversity.  At the same time I knew it would only be a matter of time before the complaints came in.  I could just hear hordes of parents saying "but this isn't teaching the children to speak real English", "I don't want my child pretending to be a gangster" (because believe it or not there is a blinged up gangster mouse on the show and he may not be behaving like a gangster but he is dressed as and speaks like one). It may sound like I don't approve of the show, don't get me wrong I actually like it. The thi...

Review: The Help by Kathryn Stockett

The Help is a fictional novel written by Kathryn Stockett, set in 1960's Mississippi: "where black maids raise white children, but aren't trusted not to steal the silver". The book follows three main characters; Aibleen who is raising her 17th white child for a family more concerned with themselves, than with their own baby.  Minny who is famous for her cooking as well as her sharp tongue (she's not afraid to tell you like it is, whether you're black or white) and Miss Skeeter, a young white woman who has returned from college to find her beloved maid Constantine has disappeared.  The three main characters become friends as Miss Skeeter who is a keen writer, decides to write a book about white families and their black maids. I first heard about this book watching a review on the TV Book Club with Jo Brand.  They seemed to be 50/50 on their opinion of the book.  Their main concern was, how can a white author identify with the black maids?  How ...
